William Kumuyi, a former Professor of Mathematics at the University Of Lagos, Nigeria, is the founding Senior Pastor and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) worldwide. Dr. Johan Combrinck reports that the ministry in its Lagos branch of the church, which is directly under Pastor Kumuyi, has an attendance of 120,000 every Sunday, and has planted 500 churches in Lagos, and 5,000 in the rest of Nigeria (with an independent estimate of more than 800,000 members in Nigeria, 3,000 elsewhere and with missionaries to 40 countries in Africa) (Source: AFNET).

From a small beginning, the church under Kumuyi’s leadership has established itself as the fastest growing church on the African continent. In 1988, the Deeper Life Bible Church won the recognition of the conference of the Pentecostal and Evangelical Churches worldwide as the largest single church congregation in Africa, and the third largest in the world. The Church is constructing a 125,000 capacity stadium- like auditorium in Lagos, Nigeria to accommodate its growing congregation. The phenomenal growth of the church tends to overshadow its small beginning with 15 adult members in 1973.

As the DCLM blossomed throughout Africa it also extended its missionary exploits to Western Europe, Russia, Asia, India and North America. Dr. C. Peter Wagner, in an article titled “Those Amazing post-Denominational Churches” to which DCLM belongs wrote: “By far, the most rapidly growing segment of Christianity on all six continents is a type of church that does not fit traditional categories or classifications. Perhaps one title that would fit is the term “post- denominational”.

Pastor Kumuyi’s passion for evangelism has brought him in contact with great evangelists like Billy Graham and Bruce Wilkinson among others. He was one of the key speakers at the evangelism conference Lausanne II held in Manila, the Philippines, 1989 and the Amsterdam 2000 organized by Billy Graham evangelistic group. In Turn the Tide conference of May 2003, held in South Africa, Kumuyi, in association with other notable speakers reached an estimated 300,000 people in the eight major countries of Southern Africa. The conference was broadcast live via 400 satellite links.

Pastor Kumuyi resides in Lagos, Nigeria, the headquarters of the DLCM, where he oversees the ministry’s outreaches worldwide. He is married to Biodun and they have two sons, Jerry and John.

Pastor Kumuyi writes for the New African Magazine monthly. Follow the link below for his monthly column entitled Nuggets in a Nutshell.
